What is Pilates?
Pilates is well known for its body sculpting effects from movements which work to lengthen and stretch all the major muscle groups and improve flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness!
Pilates will improve your physical strength, flexibility, and posture, whilst enhancing your mental awareness too.
It was developed by Joseph Pilates during World War I to assist in the rehabilitation of casualties. Joseph himself was a gymnast, bodybuilder, martial artist, boxer, circus performer, and fitness innovator.
Joseph often referred to Pilates as “Total Body Conditioning” as it incorporates both physical and mental health.
Joseph Pilates states:
“Whole body health can be achieved through exercise, proper diet, good hygiene and sleeping habits, plenty of sunshine and fresh air and a balance in life of work, recreation and relaxation.“
Joseph also liked to refer to Pilates as “Contrology”. This is due to the fact that it focuses on the quality and control of the movement, rather than repetitions.
Pilates will improve your muscle strength, flexibility, tone and endurance, as well as offering mental and emotional benefits! It offers holistic health and focuses on breath with the movement, which assists to reduce stress. You’ll walk out simply feeling wonderful!
Andrea’s classes provide a good mix of stretching and strength, relaxation and challenge. I always look forward to her hour of friendly and enjoyable instruction and her ability to motivate me to extend myself further. At the end of the class I have great sense of accomplishment and well-being and I return to work refreshed and energised. Carole
